History

For the most part of our existence, we've believed that the universe was infinite and eternal. This universe was seen to be in a steady state, not expanding or changing, but with the occasional star birth or supernova.

We've also believed ourselves to be in the middle of the entire universe, with spheres of stuff surrounding us that belonged to planets, the Sun, stars, etc. With the Copernican models, we shifted our thinking from geocentric to heliocentric. Yet, for the most part, our thoughts on the larger scales of the universe held on more solidly: we were in the center of the static, infinite and infinitely old universe.
